About
Studio Casatua was founded by British-born designers Candida and Tim Surgenor — two people who understand, from experience, exactly what international clients need when renovating in Italy.
Candida Surgenor
Candida’s design career began in London with Candy & Candy, the luxury developers synonymous with some of the world’s most prestigious residential projects. From there, Candida spent almost a decade leading five-star hotel and luxury private residence interiors at Blainey North in Australia. Her career has brought her into collaboration with some of the most respected names in international design — among them Zaha Hadid, Kelly Hoppen and Andrew Martin, for clients ranging from movie stars to captains of industry. The result is a designer who brings rare international depth to every project — and an instinctive understanding of what discerning clients expect.
Tim Surgenor
Tim trained as a lawyer in London before building a career in property development and architectural management. That combination — legal rigour applied to construction oversight — means your investment is protected at every stage. Contracts, permits, contractors, costs: nothing is left to chance.
Based in Tuscany and fluent in both the language and the culture, Candida and Tim founded Studio Casatua to give international investors something that had always been missing: a team with genuine local expertise and the international standards to match.
Alessio Mazza
Alessio brings a rare combination of inherited expertise and international perspective to every project. Born into a family of designers and mentored by the renowned designer Samuele Mazza, he grew up immersed in the principles of Italian craftsmanship, elegance and architectural refinement.
His career has taken him across Europe and North America, where exposure to international design culture sharpened a sensibility that is distinctly Italian in character yet entirely contemporary in execution.
At Studio Casatua, Alessio serves as Design Manager — the critical bridge between design vision and built reality. Working directly with contractors and specialist craftsmen on site, he ensures that every detail of the design intent is executed exactly as specified, and that the standard our clients expect is never compromised in translation from drawing board to finished space. He is often the primary point of contact for clients throughout the renovation process — bringing both the design authority and the on-site presence to ensure nothing is lost between what was agreed and what is delivered.
Interiors by Candida Surgenor
“Even with all our experience in design and project delivery, renovating in Italy tested us. We built Studio Casatua so it never has to test you.”
When we moved to Italy, we searched for our own home for over a year — viewing dozens properties before finding the right one. What followed was an education in the real complexity of Italian renovation: the planning constraints hidden in beautiful old walls, the contractors who operate to entirely different standards, the bureaucracy that moves on its own timeline, the cultural nuances that no amount of preparation quite readies you for.
Tim’s developer background helped. Candida’s design experience helped. But there were still moments — and we say this honestly — where the process felt overwhelming. Not because Italy isn’t worth it. It absolutely is. But because navigating it without the right people around you is far harder than it needs to be.
What no professional background could have taught us, however, is what we’ve learned simply by living here. Inhabiting a historic villa ourselves has given us an understanding of these buildings that goes beyond architecture and project management — how they breathe with the seasons, how light moves through ancient walls, where modern intervention enhances and where it diminishes, how to make a centuries-old space feel genuinely comfortable without erasing what makes it extraordinary. That knowledge is something we bring to every client project.
That realisation is what became Studio Casatua. Eight years, multiple projects and an exceptional team of architects, designers, project managers and craftsmen later — we exist to give our clients something we had to find the hard way: complete confidence that their Italian renovation is in the right hands, from the very first call to the moment they walk through the door.
